EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0European Parliament\u00a0on\u00a0February 12 ratified\u00a0the EVFTA and the EVIPA\u00a0agreements between Vietnam\u00a0and the\u00a0EU. The\u00a0FTA\u00a0will now need to be\u00a0ratified by\u00a0the\u00a0Vietnam National Assembly which is expected in May 2020. (full text of the agreement<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The EVFTA is the first comprehensive and\u00a0ambitious trade\u00a0and investment\u00a0agreements\u00a0that the\u00a0EU\u00a0has\u00a0ever concluded\u00a0with a developing\u00a0country\u00a0in Asia. It is the\u00a0second agreement\u00a0in the\u00a0ASEAN\u00a0region\u00a0after Singapore\u00a0and it will intensify the bilateral relations between\u00a0Vietnam\u00a0and the\u00a0EU.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0EU-Vietnam\u00a0trade\u00a0agreement will eliminate over 99% of all\u00a0tariffs, and partly\u00a0remove\u00a0the rest through limited zero-duty\u00a0quotas, known as\u00a0Tariff Rate Quotas (TRQs). Vietnam will liberalise 65% of import duties on EU exports to Vietnam at entry into force, with the remainder of duties being gradually eliminated over a 10-year period. EU duties will be eliminated over a 7-year period.<\/p>\n

The trade agreement also contains specific provisions to address non-tariff barriers in the automotive sector, and will provide protection for 169 traditional European food and drink products, known as Geographical indications (GIs), like Parmigiano Reggiano cheese or champagne wine. Vietnamese GIs too will be recognised as such in the EU, providing the adequate framework for further promoting imports of quality products.<\/p>\n

Through the trade agreement, EU companies will also be able to participate on an equal footing with domestic Vietnamese companies in bids for procurement tenders by authorities and state-owned enterprises in Vietnam.<\/p>\n
